Eco-Acoustics and Spatial Ecology [EASE] Lab

Our team examines impacts of climate change, land use/cover change and green energy development on different aspects of biodiversity, including species distribution, community structure and composition, and taxonomic and functional diversity. We characterize biodiversity patterns across spatial and temporal scales using acoustic sensing, remote sensing, and citizen science and open biodiversity data. We then integrate ecological modeling, big data analyses and machine learning to understand how biodiversity responds to human-induced environmental changes. Our current projects include:

  1. Impacts of urbanization on the trait composition and functional diversity of avian assemblages;
  2. Understanding biodiversity responses to climate variability and extreme weather events through soundscapes;
  3. Influences of climate variability on the trait composition of moth communities;
  4. Potential impacts of future climate change on bat species distributions and diversity patterns; and
  5. Effects of wind energy development on bats.
